Celebrating Ugliness

22 Nov

Working in tourism you are often surrounded with images of beauty.   I find the website I like the website “Ugly New Zealand” refreshing, which celebrates the “not exactly postcard spots of New Zealand”.  Today’s post was particularly dear to my heart – the Nelson City Council building and clock-tower.  Truly one of the ugliest examples of concrete-on-the-outside architecture from the 1960’s – 1970s.

Another fine example of this architectural style is Wellington’s own government executive building – affectionately known as “the Beehive”.  It received the dubious distinction of being the world’s 3rd ugliest building according to Virtual Tourist’s Second Annual World’s Ugliest Buildings Awards which described it as “slide projector that fell on a wedding cake that fell on a waterwheel”.  I quite like the Beehive, personally, but hey.
